When talking about hard working artists, Great Big Sea are up there with your James Browns and U2s of the music world. Their career started in 1993 when four friends got together in their home of Newfoundland with a simple goal in mind; to educate the world about how entertaining folk music could be by performing traditional songs in a contemporary style. Their initial instincts and subsiquent hard work obviously payed off with their previous two albums, 1995's up and 1997's Play both selling over 200,000 in their native Canada and backed up with a string of Top 20 radio hits. Their fans have voted them Entertainer of the Year for four consecutive years at the East Coast Music Awards and in 1999 they were nominated for a Juno award for best group. All of this might seem remarkable for those who dismiss Great Big Sea as a folk band but none of this would seem surprising to anyone who has followed Great Big Sea's remarkable career.
