Laika, named after the first dog in space, have been lauded by everyone from Brian Eno to Tricky and allegedly share a small flat with Pierre Henry, Sly and Robbie and Kristin Hersh. Their first album, Silver Apples of the Moon (1994) saw a Melody maker single of the week, The Wire's 'Out Rock' album of the year a North American tour with Tricky and a slot on Loolapalooza. Laika's second album, Sounds of the Satellites (1997) again saw a Melody Maker single of the Week as well as a top 50 album of the year and the sole support on Radiohead's UK tour, at Thom Yorke's request. This year's Good Looking Blues is possibly their most accessible album yet, pushing rock and electronica to extraordinary heights. It's a collision of folk stories and blues, horns and drums, schizophrenic songs and tall tales, and electrified myths and melodies to spite these incommensurate times.
