Using guitar squall and trip-hop beats as their springboard, the SNEAKER PIMPS (a phrase coined by the Beastie Boys to describe a fellow they paid to search for hard-to-find gym shoes) have discovered a shadowy realm somewhere between indie, alternative, dance, sci-fi and voodoo. Filled with unearthly grooves and provocative lyrical twists, the Pimps full-length debut Becoming X was a critical success when it was released in the UK in August 1996 and in the United States in February 1997. . The Melody Maker called Becoming X "an embarrassing wealth of ridiculously strong melodies...dirty, dark and contemptuously cool."
