Named after the string instrument featured in their music, Yat Kha are a totally a totally unique folk-rock group from Tuva, an autonomous region of Russian central Asia, known for its rich and distinctive vocal tradition of throat-singing. The Washington Press describes the unusual dual and triple note overtones of Tuvan throat singers as having "a pulsing, rolling quality sustained for lung-aching duration...capturing the essence of everflowing water and ever-flowing wind." The demise of the Soviet Union and incresed access to western media and audiences has lead to a growing international interest in Tuvan music. The popularity of traditional Tuvan music is a natural point of departure for Yat Kha, whose latest record revitalises this tradition with innovative instrumentation and a politically-charged underground punk ethos.
