Formed by Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, Yo La Tengo have been a band since 1985. Initially playing with a loose line up of associates, the couple worked at an incredible rate and by the time James McNew offered up his service as the band's perminant bass player in 1992 they were about to embark on album number six. A move to the Matador label in 1993 saw the band move in to a more atmospheric and textural direction with works such as 'Painful', 'Electr-o-Pura' and the quite spectacular genre-spanning 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One.' Their most recent album 2000's 'And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out' brilliantly captures the essence of Yo La Tengo embracing their enthusiasm for improvisation and and an organic creative process. The album was supported by a major European Tour, the undoubtable highlight being the band's sell-out night at The Royal Festival Hall, London.
